Bigcore Mk-6 (Tita Nium) is now online, and compiling Java (Of all things)
Office is still not running, but file services are, and so is remote desktop. Contact for account reinstatement.
We added a 1tb drive, and a 160 gb drive, so let the fun begin.
Title says it all. We are however, underclocked to 1.6ghz until the hot stops.
Moving it physically to another location. I’ll post again when its up.
So We’re totally running out of disk (again) after I added another 320gb hard disk (again). I’m looking at the purchase of Several (read: 4) 1TB drives and setting them up in a RAID 5 to give us 3TB of space that we can actually lose a drive of before we’re in trouble. But first lets talk about some of the neat things I found out after the upgrade:
We have a hotplugging SATA controller! It’s fucking awesome! Drive goes down, System doesn’t. Plug Drive back in, Drive comes back up! Yay for hotplug! We have 4 of these SATA-300 ports on the board and we’ve made excellent use of them thus far.
I totally spaced when I did the upgrade. I had 2GB of ram on my desk earlier this week looking at it going “Why did I get this?” - Figured it out on Friday. The system currently only has 1gb in it. How did that happen. Dont know. Going to change that. Unfortunately that’s NOT a hotplugging operation (boy do we ever wish) so I’m going to do that when I get new disks (because although we can hotplug, I’m not going to screw 4 drives into an active machine, Fuck that.)
We have saved about 75% on energy going into bigcore through this update, so we’re officially doing our part for mother earth. And we’ve gotten a lot out of it. We can actually encode H.264 in just over real time. So more power for less power. Win.
Anyway, Disks. We currently have something like 1.1 TB of addressable disk in the system and a RAID5 would bring us up to something like 2.8 TB. This is the plan and this one will move forward sooner or later, however, if in between now and the upgrade the 1.5 or 2tb drives become cheap and efficient and safe, I’ll go there.
We’re now on Mk5, submit software requests and Username recreation requests over aim.
New things:
At least 4 people can login at once, don’t know how many total, but its already 1 more than the 3 we had before.
Faster processor with SSE3 Extensions, so we can encode video that much faster. It also runs 10C cooler.
Gigabit Ethernet.
One of our 500gb hard disks has SATA-300 support, and I can’t be sure but I think the board does too. Which means one disk (whichever one it is) is now REALLY fast.
We have a Geforce 6600 GT in a PCI Express slot, we can change that out later for getting a GPGPU setup going.
RAM is dual channel.
Firewire, giving us more connectivity options when it comes to external stuff.
Far more disk support, so we can add more disks.
A better power supply that doesn’t undervolt the 2.5v rail anymore
COOLING!
Due to the absolutely dangerous storm headed for NJ Right now, Bigcore will be going offline at 6:30 tonight for a length of time that is currently undetermined. Save your work ladies and gentlemen.
And now it crashes less. This is very good.
Firefox has been acting up lately, so Im going to uninstall it and reinstall it today. Anyone with a Firefox process open will be forcively logged off without warning. Once its working Ill edit this.
Edit: And were golden
Not really though. I’m running MediaCoder to convert some video files. Making smart phone versions of all the G.A. episodes among other things. let me know if you want something converted for your phone. I’ll queue it.
